Lunchtime at St Mary's
At St Mary's we believe that lunchtime should be a fun time.
A time to relax, to talk, to sit with friends and enjoy good healthy food within a friendly and unhurried atmosphere.
From the very small where they need special attention with their own mini sized cutlery and fun coloured plates and bowls, where they are served individually at the table, the food cut up just right for them and always the same faces there in the dining room to reassure them.
To the older ones who can come into lunch when they are ready, make their choices from the wide
selections of foods on offer and then sit with their friends to chat and take their time before going to play in the garden.
The term "Healthy eating" has become something of a cliché these days with many foods purporting to be good for us; only on closer inspection do we find they contain many unnecessary additives and colourings as well as unacceptable levels of salt and sugar.
At St Mary's we have no such worries as all of our menus are derived wherever possible from fresh local growers and suppliers, delivered daily and prepared, cooked and served to our own exacting standards. The E H O have awarded us a 4* rating
for our high standards of hygiene practices, training and management skills, a recognition we feel quite rightly proud.
In order for us to make it easier for the children to understand the concept of a“healthy eating plate” I introduced the colour coded salad bowls:
Red for protein
White for carbohydrates
Green for vitamins
Basic, but it works, the children understand that they should have a balance of these things on their plate and very quickly begin to ask for a nutritious, healthy lunch. (much better than some of the teaching staff, mentioning no names…headmaster)
Of course being an independent school we are not governed by the strict guidelines set down by local education authorities we can add items to our menus to make them more fun and isn't the old adage “a little of what you fancy” very true.
So, we do serve chips on a Friday and make the occasional chocolate sponge and pink custard! but the all time favourite has to be pear and mars bar crumble, I once tried to take it off the menu, the screams could be heard in the bell tower.
The kitchen is always open to parents to call and talk to me or my staff about any issues or concerns you may have with your children's dietary requirements
Or, why not come along to one of our parent to lunch days and see for yourself.
